We scroll the foreground at twice the speed of the background, producing a realistic parallax effect.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/o_cY5_WCL38\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Stage 3:<\/h2>\n<p>We add the status panel to the bottom of the display, implementing it as a separate virtual screen.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XDbexQGruec\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Stage 4:<\/h2>\n<p>We add the player&#8217;s ship, which she can control using a mouse or joystick. It is implemented as two attached sprites which we move in lockstep.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UjORcx75Py8\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Stage 5:<\/h2>\n<p>We add the alien enemies. They are drawn into and erased from the background playfield using the blitter and a double-buffering technique.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wK33tTLR1kE\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Stage 6:<\/h2>\n<p>We use some unique features of the blitter to detect collisions between the player&#8217;s ship and the aliens, destroying the former when its shields are depleted.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G0cgDT4KONs\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Stage 7:<\/h2>\n<p>We give the player the ability to shoot back.
